UNDERSTANDING YOUR LEVEL

Different locations can provide new challenges for Stand Up Paddlers and it’s important to understand how conditions such as waves and winds can effect paddle conditions, safety and equipment choices. At Coast to Coast we specialise in coastal conditions and cover everything from learning the basics in flat conditions through to exploring the coastline in a range of more challenging conditions. SUP learning can now be re-enforced with water drills, land training, video analysis and improved fitness and flexibility.

SUP LEVEL 1 – BEGINNER LESSONS

This is for newcomers to the sport that have never paddled before or have never done a lesson on the coast.

Our introductory classes are comprehensive and run in flat conditions on the coast or enclosed environments and cover the basics of controlling and turning the board lying down, kneeling and standing. We also include learning basic paddle technique and an introduction to safety and equipment.

SUP LEVEL 2 – SKILL BUILDER TOURS

Paddlers at this level can consistently stand and paddle and are now looking to build skills in slightly more challenging conditions on the coastal waters.

We look at the basis of decision making, where to paddle safely, how to self rescue and deal with tricky situations. We also look at how to improve paddle technique, turning skills, dealing with small surf or chop and wind at sea. These classes often include short tours along the coastline and really help progression in learning.

SUP LEVEL 3 – INTERMEDIATE TOURS

Paddlers at this level have paddled independently for a while and are looking to build a variety of skills.

At this stage we are starting to specialise a little adapting organisational and technical paddle skills to different environments. This could include learning how to design safe paddle routes from scratch based on a forecast or learning how to adapt new paddle technique to new environments. This can include how to surf small waves, how to sup in open ocean swell or learn basic down wind skills in light to moderate winds. Our coaching covers a better understanding of forecast reading and equipment knowledge. We may also use land training and video coaching and analysis help you improve.
