Junior Development Team

Every year we identify 16 local junior surfers (normally from the Lothian region) to help their surf progression on a more continuous basis. The development junior team runs year round and is a partnership between the Belhaven Surf Club and Coast to Coast Surf School and is run by our instructors. We meet Friday afternoons on a continuous basis in the summer and Autumn terms and attend competitions throughout the year.

We identify juniors that impress in lessons or competitions and are identified as having potential by our instructors and senior staff. We are now in our third generation of junior surfers.

Since 2004 we have helped to develop promising young local surfers.  Many of the juniors have qualified for Scottish Junior teams and a few have gained national titles and benefited from International travel.

In our first generation we had Phoebe and Max, both have represented Scotland and Phoebe has gone on to become the national ladies champion and recenently finished 5th in the British qualifier for the Olympics in Thurso in April 2021.

Our second generation had some great achievements both internationally and nationally. Clover Christopherson was 6th in the European Junior Bodyboard champs 2018 in Portugal and U18 Scottish surfing girls champion at 15, in 2019 at the Gathering of Clans (GOC) she was U18 winner and 2nd to Pheobe in the GOC Womens event. Mikey Wimbledon made quarterfinals at U16 and U18yrs Bodyboarding and 3rd round in the Longboarding U18 at the European juniors in 2018 aged 14yrs and was Scottish Bodyboard mens champ. Malcolm Todd and Callum Ainge also came 2nd and 3rd in the Junior U18 boys GOC in 2019.

Malcolm and Clover are part of our instructor team.

In 2021 we are starting our third generation from April 2021, with a group of 16 young local surfers to help them improve. Ranging from 9yrs to 16yrs these junior surfers have been identified in 2020 lessons and will be given the opportunity to be part of the new Belhaven Junior team.

If you haven’t been identified by our staff but are a promising junior in the Edinburgh, Lothian or Borders area please send us a video or get in touch. Its likely there will be a junior competition circuit this year starting in July again and thats another way to get noticed.
