We have an experienced team of instructors, all of whom have current Surf Lifesaving GB (SLSGB) lifeguard, International Surfing Association (ISA) or Academy of Surf Instructor (ASI) Surf and SUP qualifications, and full disclosures.
SAM SENIOR INSTRUCTOR
“I love the stoke you get from helping a customer get their first wave!!” Owner of Coast to Coast and Scottish Juniors team coach 2016, ASI Level 3 Surf and Stand Up Paddle and ISA Surf Judge with fifteen years of coaching all levels. Sam won the 2009, 2010, 2016 Scottish National Longboard surf titles and came 8th in European Surf Champs Longboarding in 2017.
JOSH SENIOR INSTRUCTOR
“whether its doing a backflip on a bodyboard or flying down the face of a big wave on a surfboard – it’s all rad!!!” ISA Level 2 Surf Instructor, ASI SUP Level 3 Instructor, and Bodyboard coach. Fourteen years teaching experience and two decades Scottish surfing experience. Josh is among the top bodyboarders in Europe (4th European champs 2017). His acrobatic skills have won the Scottish Bodyboarding title multiple times.
JAKE SENIOR INSTRUCTOR
Jake has been with the team since 2013, from our Junior Assistants to full senior instructor in 2017. Always with a smile, Jake is super laid back especially as a Cambridge Graduate and was the most improved instructor of our team in 2016. He will be our main instructor on the west coast islands in 2019! A real asset!
Edinburgh surf grom, Iona joined our team from school surfing courses in 2013. She became our youngest ever instructor at 17yrs and always brings a smile to work. In 2019 she will be key to our east coast summer operation! She’s also a good surfer coming 2nd at the Gathering of the Clans Ladies division 2016 and represented Scotland in 2017!
Oisin was definitely our most improved instructor in 2018. Our gentle giant, Oisin is so enthusiastic in lessons and creates a wonderful relaxed vibe. He’s passionate about the worlds future, and as an undergraduate Marine Biology always tries to emphasize what we can do to help the beach and coastal environment in lessons! Oisin also won the U18 Bodyboard national title and made a few rounds in 2016 in the Euro Juniors.
At coast to coast we pride ourselves on developing our junior surfers, many of which benefit from years of surf development and in-house training before becoming Coast to Coast instructors of the future. The next generation are below :
Clover has been kicking about the surf school for a decade, learning off the extended surf family! Now aged 16yrs Clover with a super friendly attitude, Clover will be part of our next generation of instructors, shes great with kids and adults! In 2017 she was part of the Scottish Junior Surf team winning the u16 girls division in Ireland. In 2018 she improved again winning the U18 girls national title and making the Scottish national womens final. She then made semi final in the U18 bodyboarding in European Surf champs. She is also up for everything, froths on Stand Up Paddling, skates on a Carver quicker than the senior instructors and jumps off the highest Coasteering cliffs. Loads of talent what will 2019 bring?
Elliot, is an ex Scottish squad junior and one of the fasted improving surf juniors in East Lothian. Multiple talented Elliot (an amazing rugby player too) has a heart of gold and is brilliant with kids and adults alike.
Mikey is our most talented male competitive junior surfer and had a great 2018. Getting to the quarterfinals of both the U18 and U16 bodyboarding and 3rd rep round in longboarding at the Euro champs. He won the U18 bodyboard national title, was 2nd in U14 surfing and won everything in our local comps. Hes only 14yrs! Mikey is really enthusiastic, so stoked and always helpful in lessons.
Malcolm has been in our junior team for three years and is the most improved junior of our surf team in 2018 and has been earmarked as an instructor for 2019. Hes grown so much and could be mistaken for one of our student instructors, full of energy with a cheeky smile hes really reliable and always looking to help!
Our newest member of the junior assistants. Annie is a natural, gifted in communication and organisation, shes super sharp and great with customers and staff a like! Lovely girl too and one for the future!
SURF SCHOOL JOB OFFERS
Applications are welcome for a seasonal full time admin/office manager position for 2019 March-November.
We have two instructor positions for 2019 – cv’s welcome! May to September. One of the positions will definitely be for someone 25yrs + with experience. The other could be for a student. Must have valid instructor and lifesaving qualifications in surfing. If you have other experience in SUP or coasteering or any other sport it will be advantageous.
