The competition got great waves and Scotland will be placed firmly on the map in World surfing. Look out for Scottish surf articles in all magazines and videos over the coming months. Final results and video - www.oneilleurope.com/highlandopen/ Coast to Coast Heavy Wave Challenge 2005 - Nov 27th 2005 The competition went ahead in demanding conditions at Skateraw in East Lothian. With air temperatures between 0c and 3c and the threat of snow there was a surprisingly good entry for the first reef competition in the area with 8 competitors entering to take on the large onshore November swell. With consistent 12ft plus wave faces coming through the organisers new the comp would run but with easing winds predicted the contested was delayed for 3 hours. As the swell and tide dropped back, the first competitors went into the water, a strong rip still making conditions difficult. With the odd 8 to 10ft face coming through the surf was contestable but produced surprising results with pre comp favourite Damon Hewitt put out by Jason Burnett and Duncan Halliday who both made more of the big lumpy waves and short rides. Gunnar Groves -Raines surfed well but lost out by a fraction finishing 3rd. By the time the second heat entered the water the winds and dropped and the reef started to fire producing fast walling 50-75m long lefts. Goofy rider Iain McWilliams excelled dropping into some big peaks and pulling a couple of big floaters. Sam Christopherson followed Iain into the final with a couple of really long rides milking the waves for maximum points. Adam Steinitz (3rd) and Peter Box (4th) both from Edinburgh, got one good wave each and also some heavy pin downs. The final saw smaller conditions, where Iain and Duncan really did not get into their rhythm being confused by the moving peaks, both had one good wave and a couple of pretty big wipeouts off the shallow central peak. Jason surfed really well picking both the choice left and rights and seemed to be in the right place for everything, catching half a dozen great waves. Sam caught one really good wave to add to a couple of smaller rides but ran out of time to find the wave that may have challenged Jason's dominance. Final results 1st place : Jason Burnett : Midlothian, 2nd place : Sam Christopherson : East Lothian, 3rd Place : Duncan Halliday - Edinburgh, 4th Place : Iain McWilliam : Fife Jason walked away with a new Snugg wetsuit and the annual "Coast to Coast Surf School Heavy Water trophy". If your interested in joining just log on, there is a £20 annual fee. The club is based in Dunbar and aims to provide a safe foundation for newcomers entering the sport and advanced surfers wishing to push surfing standards. Local Surfers raise over £1000 for charity! Over 30 surfers took part in a surf tour of Scotlands south east coast beaches on Saturday 2nd April 2005 to raise money for Tsunami Surf Relief UK appeal and Surfers Against Sewage. The weather was fantastic and the surfers collected money on all the high streets and beaches including Portobello, Gullane, North Berwick, Dunbar, Pease Bay and Coldingham. We would like to thank the general public in Edinburgh, East Lothian and the Borders for being so generous and we have been told that UK wide surf tours combined have raised enough money to build new houses for over 40 people thank you! It was amazing to see so many surfers turnout, some of whom had travelled from as far as Dundee and Id like to thank all the public that donated money and a special thanks to the staff at East Links farm and Dunbar Swimming pool. We would also like to thank Arch White (photographer) and St Vedas, Animal, and Tisos for their support. The surfers put on a show at each beach even though the surf was flat competing in a run - surf paddle run relay exhibition - Scotlands version of the beach lifeguard training in Australia!!!
